Tips to speed recovery after abortion

Following an uncomplicated abortion, physical recovery usually happens quite quickly.
Here’s a list of some things you can do to make the experience easier, and also symptoms to look out for.
Sex after abortion

It’s advised not to have sex of any kind until 2 weeks after an abortion to help minimise the risk of infection and give your body the best chance to recover after treatment.

Pregnancy test after abortion

A pregnancy test should be taken 4 weeks after your treatment to ensure its been successful.

Contraception after abortion

It’s possible to become pregnant again straight away, so don’t forget to use your contraception immediately after abortion. If you take the pill then you can begin the day after. If you received the contraceptive implant, contraceptive injection or coil at the clinic, this will start to work immediately.

Washing after abortion

The medication you’ve been given can make you feel weak, dizzy or faint – it’s advised to leave washing for 24 hours after treatment. If possible, have someone at home with you when you first wash. To reduce the risk of infection and irritation avoid using Dettol, or heavily scented products around your vagina and genital area.

Tampons after abortion

Tampons can be used 4 weeks after your treatment or after your first period. Waiting until then helps to minimise the risk of infection.

Exercise after abortion

Swimming, team sports, going to the gym, horse riding or heavy physical work can all increase bleeding. After an abortion its recommended not to do any sort of exercise for 2 weeks or lifting for the first few days.

Alcohol after abortion

Alcohol should be avoided for 48 hours following treatment as it can increase the risk of heavily bleeding. Alcohol should not be consumed whilst taking antibiotics.

Leaking breasts

As your body was preparing for pregnancy this is a very common sight and may take a while to get back to normal. Avoid squeezing or stimulating your breasts and nipples as this will increase the leakage.

Breastfeeding after abortion

If you’ve had a medical abortion, you will not be able to breastfeed for five hours after taking the second set of tablets. You may choose to express some milk before attending the clinic to get you through until you are well enough to continue breastfeeding.

Sexually transmitted infections

If you think you have one it is important that you see a health professional that can help you with this as soon as possible as untreated infections can lead to infertility and be easily transmitted to sexual partners.

Feelings after your abortion

It’s not just about how you feel physically but its how you feel mentally too. Look after your feelings as well as your body. There’s lots of people you can talk to.
